Even if you’re planning to upgrade to an XLR setup, it may not necessarily turn out to be what you thought of tweaking the settings of interfaces all the time. But probably, once find your favourite, then they’re set in stone. Changes are made until you have guests or co-hosts for your podcast. So, even for an XLR mic, whether it will suit you or any user right away could be important.
The one with a warm and pleasant tone easily stands out as an all-rounder in most cases. For those with high-pitched sounds or who get harsh without noticing during talks or interviews, the bass-heavy tone can smooth out the harshness to make their voice less aggressive, thus easier to listen to.
You might think that it will get tricky when such a type of mic needs to handle the bassy and deep voice. Despite being low-forward, this very Tank1 doesn’t go all the way down to 20 Hz, so at least the rumbling sound won’t be a problem, and the disadvantage of the proximity effect from a cardioid dynamic capsule won’t scale up noticeably either. It just reproduces the warmth and depth of your true voice, basically the same as the K688 or even the AmpliGame AM8.
But the Ace is still up its sleeve, the weighty lows at 50Hz can dive quite deep down. As a result, the tighter bass, which doesn’t muddle your voice, instead making it towards punchy, is the exact tone that sets the Tank1 apart from not just those two FIFINE’s dynamic models but most of the others.
Even though you may not necessarily need to switch it on if your voice is towards the highs already, since the background noise is the last thing that you need to worry about.
Noise rejection is almost a cliché term when it comes to the impression of a low-sensitivity dynamic mic. But not every one of them can pull off the trick well if they don’t have good directional pickup. In the case of this FIFINE Tank1, it could miss your voice if you don’t speak directly on top of it. In other words, if you talk to it in the right direction and in a proper distance, it basically doesn’t capture the background.
However, in real life, your recording suffers from not just room sound, but all sorts of noises as well. FIFINE Tank1 covers your back well with the full metal casing and balanced XLR connectivity blocks out interference quite completely. This should not strike you as odd since it’s one of the pro-facts of the XLR setup.
The microphone technique that you need to learn with this Tank1 is the speaking range, but that’s all. It doesn’t come with any pop filter, though you don’t necessarily need one. Not just because when you put one on, the mic will instantly fail the looking test, but also the distance from the mesh top to the capsule and the internal pop filter. As a result, the air won’t be able to blow directly and hard into the mic.
Because of the tight bass and flat mids, even though there’s a slight boost at highs to brighten the overall sound just a little bit, it still comes across as a dark tone. The classic sound of a proper dynamic microphone.
It’s far from being notoriously hard to drive as a proper one, which makes it some sort of plug-and-play. Being plugged into your current XLR setup and it’s good to play with its non-obtrusive tone.
But if you’re just starting out without all the necessities to get going, then you might need to invest a bit more than you could spend with the Tank3 or K688 since the gain boost alone would require 60dB to get the best out of it.
Needless to say, what entitles the name, in both sound and build terms, is the heavy-duty tank feel. Almost 1.2kg of weight makes a solid boom arm like the BM66 a must-have.
